It’s always a step back in time. A restaurant with an ambience reminiscent, perhaps, of the Rat Pack days. Red leather chairs, brick walls, low lighting, white table cloths and candlelight. Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and other sounds of the big band days playing in the background. You’ll find it only at Mr. Benny’s Steak and Lobster House in Matteson.
Dave and I are creatures of tradition. We’ve celebrated many anniversaries at Mr. Benny’s as well as many dates before we got married. We still sit at the same table by the window overlooking the statue garden. We order the same appetizer and enjoy the same wines. This year was no different.
Although Mr. Benny’s is not a local restaurant, it’s still fairly close to Kankakee.
Every guest is greeted graciously by their host/chef/manager, Larry. He comes to every table and talks to every person in the room. Our server, Debbie, was more than accommodating. She offered us some great suggestions, made sure we were taken care of all evening. We enjoyed her so much that we wanted her to pull up a chair and join us.
Although they have many delightful appetizers such as Oysters Nicholas, oysters baked with seasoned spinach and blue cheese, or the shrimp Dejonge, shrimp tossed with toasted bread crumbs, butter, garlic and parsley; we still prefer the portabella mushroom, grilled to perfection and topped with bleu cheese.
Their steaks, aged to perfection, are all char-grilled over an open flame. They have several specials that aren’t on the menu. One of my favorites is their Cider House pork chops topped with caramelized onion and apples with a beautiful cider demi glace.
Their regular menu consists of their steaks, ribs, prime rib and lobster. It’s one of the few restaurants that still serve frog legs, too. I ordered the filet; Dave the New York strip. The seasoning was perfect, grilled to perfection and large enough for several meals. I love their seasoned Italian greens.
Save room for dessert! A beautiful chocolate spoon cake; dense chocolate cake with a fudge center topped with a beautiful ganache. So rich, yet so delicious, you can only eat a portion of it.
